Event Details

Negotiation over complex environmental issues is often required in the day-to-day work of attorneys, planners, engineers and applied scientists, natural resource managers, real estate professionals and experts in hazardous waste cleanup. Yet for many of these professionals, negotiation techniques and their practical application were not part of their earlier training. CONCUR's professional development courses are specifically designed to equip professionals with these skills. Our training and real-world experience make us a premier provider of environmental training services.

Date: May 7-8, 2008

Location: Clark Kerr Campus of the University of California at Berkeley

In Course One, we show you how a process of face-to-face negotiation can augment traditional policy making with creative agreements that are better informed and more stable. During the training, participants learn the elements of mutual gains bargaining, apply them in a series of simulated disputes, and reflect on the application of these tools to everyday work situations.

The Agenda for Day One includes:

  • Current terminology
  • Detailed overview of the principled negotiation process
  • Current dispute resolution theories and their practical application
  • Negotiation styles and techniques
  • Hands-on simulations focused on environmental issues
  • Ethical responsibilities of negotiators

The Agenda for Day Two includes:

  • "How-to" guide for agreement-focused negotiation
  • Tools needed to be an effective negotiator
  • CONCUR’s stepwise model of mediated negotiation
  • Case studies, with topics ranging from land use planning and water resources management to statewide environmental planning
  • Ways to improve the negotiation process with mutual gains bargaining, joint fact-finding, and mediator or facilitator involvement

    Cost:

A coursebook, refreshments, 2 continental breakfasts, 2 full-service lunches, 1 course dinner and parking are included in the course tuition.

Individuals: $600.00 if enrolled before April 15th, $650 afterward (+online processing fees)

Students/non-profits: $450.00 (Limited availability - please contact CONCUR.)

Groups: After March 31st: 20% discount for second person; 30% discount for 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc. (See discount table.) Please contact us for group arrangements.

Note: Our definition of "organization" is broad; we want to encourage collaboration, and we will honor two enrollments from peer organizations. (For example, one from a regional office and one from headquarters.)

    **Please Note**
To enroll any person, full payment does not need to be received. Simply faxing or mailing an enrollment form with participant information will secure their place in the course. A $200 deposit should be paid by March 15th to secure a place in the course and the balance can be paid later. We also understand that some organizations have long payment cycles and are willing to accomodate those needs.
